Offline GPS Morocco: the complete guide with Triq
With Triq, you download maps of Morocco to your phone, by region or for the whole country. Once the area is downloaded, the map, search and routes work without a network. Download before you leave, preferably on Wi-Fi.
In Morocco, the network sometimes disappears at the worst moment: an Atlas pass, a road in the South, a tunnel, a medina. An offline GPS lets you keep driving with peace of mind. Here's everything Triq offers, from the map to strict mode.
The idea
Triq lets you download maps straight to your phone. Once the area is downloaded, the map, search and routes work without a network. The full tour is in using Triq with offline maps.
A catalogue of 12 regional maps
Since version 0.11.5, Triq offers a catalogue of 12 regional maps instead of big packs. In the Regions tab, you download only the ones where you drive.
- Less space used on the phone.
- Shorter downloads, so less mobile data used.
- The freedom to add a region just before a trip.
The details are in the 12-map catalogue. The catalogue is signed: the app checks its signature before using it.
Download with no nasty surprises
A map can be large. Triq warns you when a download exceeds 100 MB outside Wi-Fi, so you don't drain your data plan without meaning to. The download runs in 4 parallel ranges, so it's faster. The maps come from our own server, and where the data comes from is explained in map sources.
The right habit: download your maps at home, on Wi-Fi, the day before a long trip.
Search and route without a network
In a downloaded area, Triq searches for places and calculates routes directly on the phone. Search is typo-tolerant and understands the Darija article attached to the name: "lbahia" does find the place. When you have a network, online search is merged with offline search into a single list.
Routes offer what you expect from a GPS: alternatives, lanes, stops, arrival time, and the cost estimate described in trip cost. It's all in offline search and routes.
The voice works without a network too
The natural guidance voices (a female voice and a male voice in French, English, Arabic and Darija) are stored in the app and don't go through the network. See voice guidance in 4 languages.
And outside the downloaded area?
If no downloaded map covers your position, Triq uses the online map and routes, as long as you have a network. With no network and no map, there's nothing to display: hence the point of downloading before you leave.
Strict offline mode
If you want the phone to stop exchanging anything with the triq-maps.com server, turn on strict offline mode. A confirmation window lists what you lose, such as the online map and online search. Your downloaded maps remain usable. You can turn it off whenever you like, in Settings, under Privacy. In strict mode, Triq never asks you to enter a price.
Privacy and storage space
Triq works without an account: see Triq without an account. Your offline maps stay on your phone, even if you use "Delete my data" (details). A map takes up space like a photo: keep the regions you actually travel through and add the others before a trip.
An example of preparation
1. On Wi-Fi, open the Regions tab and download the regions along your route. 2. Check that they're there, then test a search and a route. 3. Charge your phone and fix it to your car mount. 4. Set off: if the network drops, the downloaded area keeps working.
Why by region rather than one big pack
A phone doesn't always have space to spare. If you mostly drive in your own region, there's no need to keep the whole country. You take what you need and nothing more, and you free up space afterwards if needed. The regional catalogue is made for this kind of use: for example, you keep your region's map all year round and download the other region the week before a family trip.
A concrete example in the mountains
You're heading to a small mountain town. The network drops at the first bend. If the area is downloaded, you can keep searching for an address, a café, a station, and restart a route without a network. If it isn't, Triq has nothing to calculate offline with: that's why you download before you leave.
No network isn't strict mode
Having no network isn't the same as deliberately cutting off exchanges. Without a network, everything comes back as soon as the signal returns. Strict mode, on the other hand, is a complete choice: for those who want maximum privacy or to save their mobile data. Ad counters, for example, then stay on your phone and are only sent when you turn the mode off.
Think about the rest of your gear
A good offline GPS doesn't replace a charged phone: think about your battery and your car mount. And if you're also working out the trip budget, Triq helps you estimate the toll and fuel: read Morocco motorway tolls and community fuel prices.
Key takeaways
Triq is still a free GPS, with or without downloaded maps. Download before you leave, region by region, and the network stops being an issue.
