Voice guidance in 4 languages: how it works in Triq
Triq announces manoeuvres out loud in French, English, Arabic and Darija. Since version 0.11.8, the voices are stored in the app: they work without a network and don't use the phone's voice. You choose the language when you first open the app, then you can change it in Settings.
When you're driving, you don't always look at the screen. A clear voice, in your language, does all the work. That's the goal of Triq's voice guidance.
Which languages?
Guidance voices are available in French, English, Arabic and Darija. Each has a female voice and a male voice. To choose between the two, read choosing a female or male voice.
The app's interface is also available in Amazigh (Tifinagh). For this language, the voice is still provisional for now.
Voices inside the app
Since version 0.11.8, the voices are natural: they were recorded with ElevenLabs and then added to the app. Two concrete benefits:
- they work without a network, like your offline maps;
- they don't depend on your phone's voice, so they sound the same from one phone to another.
What the voice announces
The voice announces manoeuvres in steps based on your speed, and says "You are arriving at your destination" about 50 m from arrival. Alerts start with the distance, for example: "In 200 metres, caution, speed camera ahead." You know right away whether you have time to react.
One detail to know: toll and speed limit announcements are read by the phone's voice, in French, English and Arabic. To set them up, see speed alert and limit.
Choosing and changing your language
- When you first open the app, the Welcome page asks for your language and voice.
- Later, you can change the app language in Settings.
- Voice and alert volumes are set separately in Settings.
Dialogs and notifications follow the language chosen in the app, not the system one. If your phone is in English, you can still set Triq to Arabic and choose the Darija voice: the interface language and the voice language are set separately.
What about Darija?
Darija has its own recorded voices, separate from the Arabic ones. To learn more, read Darija and Amazigh in Triq.
Why it's useful
A voice in your language reduces mental load. Instructions are easier to follow, especially on a busy roundabout or on a road you don't know. And since everything is in the app, you have nothing extra to download when it's time to leave.
If you hear a mispronounced word or a missing instruction, let us know: the idea box is there for that.
