Offline search and routing: find places with no signal

Maps and offline Published on

By , publisher of Triq

Once an area is downloaded, Triq searches for places and calculates routes directly on your phone, with no network. Search tolerates typos and the attached Darija article, as in “lbahia”. Online, it's merged with offline search.

A map without search isn't much use. Triq does both on your phone, once the area is downloaded.

Search

Type the name of a place: Triq looks for it in the downloaded maps. Search is typo-tolerant and understands the Darija article attached to the name: “lbahia” still finds the place, without you having to guess the spelling.

When you have a network, online search is merged with offline search. So you get both sources in a single list.

Routes

Routes are calculated on your phone for downloaded areas. You get what you'd expect from a GPS: alternative routes, lanes, stops, arrival time, and the cost estimate covered in trip cost.

The calculations run off the app's main thread, so the screen stays smooth while Triq thinks.

What to do beforehand

If no package covers the area, Triq switches to the online map and routes, when there's a network.

No network, but not cut off from the server

Having no network isn't the same as deliberately cutting off exchanges. For that, there's strict offline mode. And to understand everything about maps, see offline maps.

A concrete example

You're on your way to a small mountain town. The network drops at the first bend. If the area is downloaded, you can keep searching for an address, a café, a fuel station, and restart a route with no network. If it isn't, Triq has nothing to calculate offline with: that's why you download before you leave.

For names written in Darija, don't stress about spelling: search forgives small mistakes.
